SCOPE AND PURPOSE

 [Russian version]

The WHO European Region historically has the highest alcohol intake in the world and alcohol is the second most important risk factors for mortality and morbidity in the region. The Framework for Alcohol Policy in the European Region was endorsed by the Member States at the 55th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in 2005. The framework has served as a set of policy guidelines for European Member States to follow in this important area of public health. The adoption of the Global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol at the World Health Assembly in May 2010 is a good opportunity for the WHO Regional Office for Europe to review the Framework and the previous two European Alcohol Action Plans from 1995 and 2000.

Against this backdrop the regional office for Europe is organizing the twelfth Meeting of National Counterparts for Alcohol Policy in the WHO European Region. The Spanish Ministry of Health and Social Policy has kindly agreed to host the meeting, which will take place in the premises of the ministry 14-16 June 2010. The meeting is organized in cooperation with the AMPHORA group of alcohol experts in order to facilitate exchange of information between alcohol policy scientist and policymakers. The main aims of the meeting are to present the most recent research on alcohol policy, to present new WHO alcohol publications and to discuss possible next steps in the development of an European Alcohol Action Plan.

The meeting will thus be an important place to consolidate the network and to facilitate the exchange of information and experiences between national counterparts and scientists.

The meeting will be held in English and Russian.
